2007年自從蘋果iPhone導入多點觸控的概念，帶動消費電子產品的應用：智慧型手機、迷你筆電等可攜式電子。據Displaybank於2009年2月調查並預測，全球觸控面板銷售額在2007～2012年間會以年均35.1％的增長率增長。2008年全球銷售額為比上年增長43.2％約有17億7300萬美元，即使至2009年經濟低迷的情況下，也將增長51.2％約有26億8000萬美元。且市場41％需求用於手機。
的確，觸控面板已成為殺手級應用技術，自然成兵家必爭之地。從最近美國專利局授予蘋果公司的觸控面板專利US7,479,949，立即引起眾多同業間討論。美國專利局於2009年1月20日核准蘋果公司一件重要的觸控面板專利US7,479,949 (Touch screen device, method, and graphical user interface for determining commands by applying heuristics)，多達358頁的專利說明書
下載。
據Displaybank於2009年2月發行Touch Screen Panel Key Patent Trend Analysis觸控面板相關專利調查，1978～2008年的有效專利件數中，日本和美國的專利網遍佈于面板、相關部材以及使用者介面等觸控面板相關的各領域，而南韓的觸控面板相關專利較偏重於面板部分。

當然，對於已進行訴訟的大砲級專利，絕對也需更加重視及掌握。本網站調查了美國地方法院，2002-2008年有關觸控應用裝置專利訴訟案件，計有30多件80多個爭議專利，見圖一及表一。目前，主要訴訟案件集中於面板控制用IC及使用者介面。表一僅列部分訴訟專利，完整調查，歡迎來洽詢。
